Are You Addicted to Line Dancing?
It starts innocently enough.
You go to one line dancing class.
Just one.
Maybe a friend talked you into it. Maybe you thought it would be a bit of fun. Maybe you figured you’d learn a couple of dances, have a laugh, and head home.
And then something happens.
Suddenly, one class isn’t enough.
You’re checking Facebook for socials. You’re looking up dances on YouTube. You’re hearing songs in the supermarket and wondering whether there’s a line dance to them.
Before you know it, line dancing has gone from something you tried to something your entire week is somehow organised around.
So… are you addicted?
Here are a few warning signs.
1. One Class Has Somehow Become Five
You started with Tuesday mornings. Perfectly reasonable.
Then somebody mentioned Thursday nights. Then there was a social on Saturday. Then you discovered another class twenty minutes away.
Next thing you know, you’ve got a line dancing timetable that requires more organisation than your old working week.
2. You Hear a Song and Immediately Think of the Dance
Normal people hear a song and think: “Oh, I like this one.”
Line dancers hear a song and think: “Hang on… is that a restart after wall three?”
You may even catch yourself doing tiny steps in the supermarket aisle while pretending you’re just deciding which cereal to buy.
Nobody believes you.
3. You Know Dances Better Than You Know Song Names
Someone asks what song is playing.
No idea.
But you can absolutely tell them the dance is a 32-count, four-wall beginner/improver with one tag and a restart.
Priorities.
4. Your Shoes Have Become Very Important
Once upon a time, shoes were simply shoes.
Now you have opinions.
Can you turn in them? Are the soles too sticky? Will they survive three hours of dancing? Can you dance in them without developing a blister the size of Tasmania?
These are serious matters.
5. You Practise Steps in Completely Inappropriate Places
The kitchen. The hallway. The laundry. While waiting for the kettle to boil. Possibly in a public toilet when nobody else is there.
You tell yourself you’re only checking one little section.
Twenty minutes later, you’re still trying to remember what happens after the coaster step.
6. You’ve Said “Just One More Dance” at Least 400 Times
The session is nearly finished. Your feet hurt. Your back is complaining. You are absolutely going home.
Then the next song starts.
“Ohhh, I love this one.”
Fine. One more.
And then another one. And another one.
Apparently, line dancers have a very loose interpretation of the word “last”.
7. Missing a Class Feels Weird
Something comes up and you can’t go dancing. Perfectly normal life event.
But all day you’re thinking: “They’re dancing without me.” “What are they learning?” “What if they learn something really good?”
And worst of all: “What if I come back next week and EVERYBODY KNOWS IT?”
The horror.
8. You’ve Started Planning Holidays Around Dancing
Once, your holiday checklist looked like this: accommodation, restaurants, sightseeing, weather.
Now there’s another question.
“Are there any line dancing socials nearby?”
And suddenly the sightseeing schedule is looking surprisingly flexible.
9. Your Social Life Has Quietly Become Your Dancing Life
You used to catch up for coffee. Now you catch up at class.
You used to go out for dinner. Now you grab something before a social.
And half your conversations begin with: “Are you going dancing tonight?”
Somehow, this feels completely normal.
10. You’ve Fallen Down the YouTube Rabbit Hole
You only wanted to check one step sheet.
Then you watched a demo. Then another demo. Then you found the choreographer. Then you found a dance you’ve never seen before. Then you decided you absolutely need to learn it.
Congratulations.
It’s now midnight.
11. You Have Very Strong Opinions About Certain Dances
There are dances you love. Dances you tolerate. Dances you mysteriously disappear to get a drink during.
And then there are those dances.
The ones where somebody says the name and the entire room reacts.
Line dancers understand this. We do not need to explain ourselves.
12. You Can’t Imagine Giving It Up
And this is probably the biggest sign of all.
Because somewhere between learning your first basic steps, getting completely lost, laughing at yourself, finally remembering the sequence and dancing your way through a whole song… it became more than just dancing.
It became your exercise. Your social life. Your stress relief. Your challenge. Your fun. Your community.
And yes, possibly your addiction.
But there are worse things to be addicted to.
So… How Addicted Are You?
Be honest.
Are you:
👍 Yep, I’m addicted
❤️ Absolutely 100% obsessed
There is deliberately no “No” option.
We already know you’re one of us.
Share this with your line dancing friends and see who admits it first.
