What Kind of Line Dancer Are You?

Every line dancing group has them.

The dancer who knows every step.
The dancer who follows with complete confidence.
The dancer who has no idea what wall they’re facing but keeps smiling anyway.

And honestly? Most of us are a mix of several types depending on the dance, the song and how much coffee we’ve had.

So, which kind of line dancer are you?

The Confident Leader

You know the dance, you know the counts, and somehow half the room ends up watching you.

You’re usually near the front, you remember the restart, and you can recover from a mistake without anyone noticing.

At least, that’s what everyone thinks.

The pressure is real when people start copying you, especially when you suddenly realise you may have taken the wrong step three counts ago.

The Sneaky Follower

You have mastered the fine art of standing behind someone who knows exactly what they’re doing.

You don’t need to remember every count because you have a system:

Find a reliable dancer.
Keep them in sight.
Do exactly what they do.

This works brilliantly until they turn the wrong way, miss the restart or leave the floor halfway through.

Then it’s every dancer for themselves.

The Restart Rebel

You were doing perfectly well until someone shouted, “Restart!”

Now you’re wondering:

Was that the restart?
Is there another restart?
Did everyone else restart?
Why are we suddenly facing the back wall?

You may miss the occasional restart, but you carry on with confidence—and that counts for something.

The Song Lover

You hear the first few notes of your favourite song and you’re already heading towards the dance floor.

It doesn’t matter whether you know the dance perfectly. You love the music, you love the atmosphere and you’re getting up there.

You’re also the person most likely to say:

I love this song!”

Usually about five seconds before forgetting the first eight counts.

The Social Butterfly

For you, line dancing is about much more than the dancing.

You’re there for the chats, the laughs, the friendships and the catch-ups between songs.

You know who is going on holiday, who has new boots and who brought the good snacks.

You may occasionally miss the count-in because you were still talking—but you bring the fun wherever you go.

The Risky Dancer

You step onto the floor with confidence.

Do you always know the dance? Not necessarily.

Do people still follow you? Unfortunately, yes.

You give every dance a go, laugh when it goes wrong and keep moving even when the rest of the room appears to be travelling in another direction.

Your unofficial motto is:

Follow me at your own risk.

And really, line dancing would be far less entertaining without you.

The Quiet Achiever

You stand somewhere in the middle or towards the back, quietly learning everything.

You may not make a fuss, but week by week, you’re getting better.

Then one day, a new dancer starts following you—and you suddenly realise you’ve become one of the people who knows what they’re doing.

Well, most of the time.

The Freestyler

You’re not lost. You’re adding your own interpretation.

That extra turn? Artistic choice.

The little shuffle nobody else did? Personal flair.

Facing a different wall? Bold choreography.

You know line dancing is supposed to be fun, so you don’t panic when things go slightly off-script. You simply keep dancing until you find your place again.

So, which one are you?

The truth is, most line dancers are a little bit of everything.

One dance, you’re the confident leader.
The next, you’re following someone at your own risk.
Then your favourite song comes on and all sensible decision-making disappears.

That’s part of what makes line dancing so much fun.

It isn’t about getting every step perfect.

It’s about the music, the laughter, the friendships and getting back on the floor—even after you’ve completely missed the restart.

Because line dancing is always more than just steps.
